Lessons from client sessions
5 tips and why you should think of your clothes like puzzle pieces
Many of my clients hire me because they have struggled to find their style since covid. Some are new moms. Some are not moms. Some have left the work force. Some have rejoined the work force.
Some are men! Quite a few actually.
There is honestly no pattern.
The one thing they all have in common is that they want to like what they put on. They want to wear an outfit that makes them feel confident. But with an element of interesting and personality. An outfit that tells their story about who they are. Not for anyone else. But for themself.
And it all starts with our closet.
The source of many of my clients’ woes come from a closet full of:
clothes that don’t fit
too much of the same thing
Here are some themes that I cover during client sessions that my clients resonate with (I know this because I get alot of ‘OMGs’, ‘wow’, ‘SO TRUE’, and ‘you are absolutely right’ during a 60-minute facetime session)
Get rid of clothes that don’t fit. Your closet should be a place of joy, not a reminder of what doesn’t work. Whether you're rushing to get dressed or juggling kids, you don’t need to face a stack of clothes saying, "I’m too small for you." You’ll never want to reach for pants that don’t fit right. And if you're not quite ready to part with them, store them away in a bin for a little bit. The goal is to have your closet be full of clothes you can actually wear and feel good in. Outfit opportunities!
Maximize your closet space. Keep everyday wear front and center—prime spots like eye level and easy-to-reach areas should be reserved for your go-to pieces. Don't be afraid to rotate things every so often, so you don’t forget about items you haven’t worn in a while. It keeps your closet fresh and ensures you get the most out of everything you own.
Think of your clothes as puzzle pieces. Styling is about fitting them together. Avoid buying duplicates of pieces you already have. Instead, choose items that complete new puzzles - pieces that let you unlock new outfits using what you already own. This is how you build a closet full of outfits, not just clothes.
Get rid of what you don’t love. If you haven’t worn it in the last two seasons, let it go. Worst case, you miss a sweater in a year—no big deal. Your closet should feel like a boutique. Inspiring. Full of only things you love. The less you have, the easier it is to connect the dots and see potential outfits. Just like how clearing out your fridge makes meal planning easier.
Don’t buy things just to check a box. You don’t need a loafer or a black blazer unless it truly works for you. Forget the "top 10" lists. If you have to ask, "How will I style this?" then it’s probably not the right piece. Shift your mindset: you want to think, "This will help me wear X, Y, and Z." That’s the kind of piece that will actually help you create more outfits and get dressed with ease.

Closet as a place of joy! What a novel concept and one that really resonates. Out with the jeans that don't zip (ok, maybe a bin in a kids closet for now:))!
Too many of the same thing - so real
